SPT 144. From Hieroglyphs to Txting: Decipherin the Worlds Scripts 3-0-3
How do scholars decipher ancient writing systems? What do these deciphered texts teach us about the civilzation that used them? This course introduces students to the comparative study of the world's writing systems. Case studies include deciphered scripts such as Ancient Egyptian and Maya Hieroglyphs, as well as undeciphered scripts like those of ancient India and of Easter Island. This course also explores what today's communication technologies have in common with these ancient scripts.
